Proverbs 18:20-21, “A man's
belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the
increase of his lips shall he be filled. Death and life are in the power
of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”
It is very easy for us as believers to allow the wrong words to come out of our mouth. Jesus taught us this truth, “…for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.” Matthew 12:34. We should pray daily that God would use our mouth right. We should ask the Lord to develop the right heart, the right thoughts, and the right words to speak. We should also ask for help to prevent the wrong attitudes from coming out of our life. For that reason, every day I pray that God would let me speak words of praise and thanksgiving that I would glorify, honor, and bless. That He would help me not complain, grumble, back-bite, judge, or blaspheme.
There are several things that we see from this passage of Scripture that are absolutely clear:

There are several things that we see from this passage of Scripture that are absolutely clear:
1. We should be careful how we use our tongue.
2. We should look for good and uplifting words.
Someone said years ago, “Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” That is a cute little children’s saying but it is so untrue. Words can destroy.
3. Choosing your words wisely will bring joy to others and to yourself.
So be careful what you choose to say.
4. Don’t be quick with your tongue.
You can damage a person for life. The quote “Death and life are in the power of the tongue…” is true.
