"Were
they ashamed when they had committed abominations? No! They were not
at all ashamed, nor did they know how to blush." Jeremiah 8:12
I've
been reading through the book of Jeremiah and although it tells of how
Israel turned their back on God, it could easily be mistaken as a story
about the United States at the present time. We, as a nation, have been
so richly blessed by the Lord, yet we have chosen to turn our back on
Him and follow our own ways. We have known God's protection and
provision, yet we have chosen to go after gods that do not do anything
except destroy us. We have allowed our hearts to be won over by our own
desires and have put God on the backburner of our lives. Our sin has
become so commonplace that we fail to even see it as sin anymore. What
would have once shocked most people doesn't even cause us to bat an
eye. Our hearts have grown cold and our consciences have grown so
accustomed to our sin that it doesn't bother us in the least bit. The
Scripture above so accurately describes us...we are no longer ashamed of
our sin and we are so comfortable with it that it doesn't even cause us
to blush. When I really stop and think about this, it scares me to
death. It scares me because I wonder how long God will let us go on
like we are before He issues His wrath. Even tempered with grace and
mercy, His wrath will be fierce. He will not be mocked. He will not
allow other gods to take His rightful place. He will not remain silent
forever. Our only prayer is to do what God told the Israelites over and
over...repent and turn back to Him with our whole hearts. He is the
only hope for our nation!
