Happy Friday

So Little Thyme

by Christine Berglund

With all the varieties of thyme in my collection, it's a standing joke about "just how much thyme I have put into my garden." It is true, gardening takes time, and thyme, too. The herb bed is a favorite spot, and the thymes are definitely one of the most favored of the herbs. I have German Thyme, English Thyme, Lemon Thyme, Silver Thyme, Wooly Thyme, French Thyme, Creeping Thyme, and Elvin Thyme.

"Time, time, time, is on my side; yes it is," sang Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones. But the Bible clearly tells us it is not. Our short stay on this planet is but a blink of an eye in light of eternity.

"As for the days of our life, they contain seventy years, or if due to strength, eighty years, yet their pride is but labor and sorrow; for soon it is gone and we fly away" (Psalm 90:10 NASB).

Who among us did not earnestly wish we had more time in the day or the year? The ancients were likely no different. I am just now discovering that I need to take time to do the things I was saving for later, when I'm supposed to have more time. The farmer in the Bible who made big plans about his big barns thought he had unlimited time, but God proclaimed him to be a fool. He did not know when his time was up on this earth. None of mankind does.

This is why God has "set eternity in their heart"(Ecclesiastes 3:11). This life is so short and full of frenzied activity to get everything done, that the idea of eternity calms our anxious souls.

Have you ever thought it was, say, Wednesday when it was only Tuesday? Or looked at a clock wrong and then discovered you really had an extra hour or two? Allow the concept of eternity to sink in, and feel the same wave of relief wash across your frantic mind.

Yes, there is much to do in this life, and some of it has to be done before it is eternally too late. Precious people heading in the wrong direction, eternally, present an emergency that cannot wait.We don't have a guarantee of more time — not even a minute! Therefore those who are wise are "making the most of [their] time, because the days are evil"(Ephesians 5:16).

In the bigger scheme, we actually have much more time than we think.Prayerfully allow yourself to think in the broader sense of time and of eternity, and the important things will fall into place. You will do a better job using the time you have.

I think my Thyme is up.

Daily Smile:

A Sunday school teacher asked her little children, as they were on the way to church service, "And why is it necessary to be quiet in church?"

One bright little girl replied, "Because people are sleeping."
